Statlas is a tool to enable laypeople to easily visualize mappings of a set of values to a set of regions in a way that is interesting, useful and beautiful.

Generative Atlas
Early explorations of the geo domain and the task to create your own atlas like map given a set of data showed how difficult and how offline this entire process is. On the other hand the concept of an atlas has gotten into severe disuse. This is an exploration to see if we can give atlasses new currency online.

Progress
A first feature release is forthcoming in the following month. In the mean time read up on the official blog and in the weeknotes.

Origin
Statlas originated from a experiment done together with Monsterswell.
That project called Dutchstats is a statistical tool to compare election results and other key statistics on the municipal level for the Netherlands.

Networks are fundamentally changing our society. People in public space are followed by a data shadow. Personal memories that are more and more also digital trails. These digital artifacts are made public via social media posts, picture uploads, youtube footage and mobile phone usage.

Human connectivity travels with your mobile identity and creates an intimate relationship between place and data shadow.

Our room design pairs egocentric with geocentric data and makes that interpretable - data-overload as observable and therefore knowable space.

<description>My contribution to a custom design workshop with the Bang &#38; Olufsen UI Group was the look and feel of the interface
and the interaction design for navigation through a list of media entities on a handheld touch screen.

The interaction is inspired by physical manipulation of a deck of cards.

The entities move in a circular path giving the impression that they orbit the user.

The focused object is the smallest —as opposed to other designs— providing space for an unambiguous grouping with its text labels.

The texture on the bottom of the screen works as a scrollbar.

This transistions shows how different content filters are applied to the enitity in focus.

This transistions shows the top level of the list view.

<description>The first prototypes where designed and delivered in Summer 2009 while the product is coming to market a year later as the TomTom "Go Live 1000".

My role in this project was to research and deliver several design routes together with my teammates and next to screen design I created animated functional transitions.

In comparing the final result with the initial prototypes you can see how some elements are still recognizable but also how well the prototype evolved into the real product.

<description>The visual design update for the Aston Martin DBS audio tuning controls was straightforward with a effective and fast process. The display resolution is only 256 x 64 pixels and my goal was to improve readability of the graphics on this minimal pixelcount. Reviews of the egineers who worked with the car were all in favour of my design, because it made their work easier.

<description>Next to animating visual design prototypes or developing design routes for this product it was also my responsibility to deliver specifications for production.

The unusual controls on the final product are an incredibly well geared metal wheel, one slider with two hard edges, a wheel for volume control and three buttons.

It was great to experience how the first hacked together functional hardware prototypes made out of cardboard, lego and hot-glue evolved to the final product.

Without any doubt the Beosound 5 concept is a very unusual human computer interface with a lot of potential.
